- For: Space, styling, cabin quality
- Against: Expensive, E-Class boot is larger
- Verdict: Large estate that’s high on style and appeal
Once upon a time, Volvo was a company famed for its cavernous estate cars and rock-solid safety credentials.
Today, the safety reputation remains intact, but Volvo is more synonymous with stylish SUVs than with load-lugging wagons.
Does that mean that the Volvo V90 feels decidedly off-brand? Far from it, because the V90 offers the same gorgeous interior you’ll find in those SUVs, along with a nicer driving experience.
There are four trim levels: Momentum Plus, R-Design Plus, Inscription Plus and Cross Country.
In truth, the latter is more of a standalone model, fitted with all-wheel-drive as standard, a raised ride height and plastic body cladding. It’s designed to be an alternative to a high-riding SUV, and goes head-to-head with the likes of the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain.
The Volvo V90 comes with a generous level of standard equipment, including a nine-inch touchscreen display, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights, electric tailgate and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
All engines are four-cylinder units, with the range comprising a 2.0-litre diesel, 2.0 petrol and 2.0 T8 petrol-electric hybrid.
All models are blessed with a sumptuous and high-quality cabin, and although the boot isn’t the largest in its class – that honour belongs to the E-Class estate – V90 buyers are unlikely to require more space.
On the road, the V90 is smooth and comfortable, with an overriding feeling of solidity and assurance.
