- For: Comfortable, refined, safe
- Against: Lacks fizz, can get expensive
- Verdict: Comfortable and composed large executive car
Deciding whether to buy a Volvo S90 over its key German rivals comes down to what you’re after in a car.
It doesn’t drive as well as the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 or Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and its interior doesn’t offer quite the same level of quality. However, the S90 outclasses the Germans in other departments.
Put it this way: if comfort, standard equipment and safety are your top priorities, the Volvo S90 should be on your shortlist of large executive cars.
Predictably, the S90 is one of the safest cars in its class, but there’s more to this saloon than a five-star Euro NCAP rating. The cabin oozes class and sophistication, while the seats are as comfortable as you’ll find in any car at any price-point.
Aside from the T8 plug-in hybrid, the four-cylinder engines lack character, but the diesel scores highly for its refinement.
Crucially, it feels different to the Germans – and that’s a good thing.
