- For: Off-road ability, practicality, reliability
- Against: Rough around the edges
- Verdict: A proper off-roader that can tackle tough terrain
In automotive terms, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a bit of a dinosaur.
Launched in 2014, but overhauled in 2018, it competes against a new breed of soft-focus SUVs, where the emphasis is on a car’s on-road ability, rather than its off-road credentials.
In this respect, the Land Cruiser is a welcome tonic, offering peerless prowess away from tarmac, plus an almost legendary reputation for reliability.
It provides seven-seat practicality and a 2.8-litre diesel engine developing 177hp. There’s also a Land Cruiser Commercial, which is available in three- and five-door forms. It’s a credible workaday alternative to the Toyota Hilux.
The Land Cruiser can’t compete with the likes of Audi and Land Rover when it comes to on-road comfort, soft-touch plastics and refinement.
But if you’re after practicality, all-weather talents and a never-say-die attitude, the Land Cruiser is top of its class.
