Toyota Corolla review

• For: Excellent hybrids, smart styling, good build quality

The Toyota Corolla is available as a five-door hatchback, four-door saloon or estate.

There are three petrol engines to choose from: a 1.2-litre turbo producing 116hp, a 1.8 hybrid offering 122hp, and a 2.0 hybrid developing 180hp.

All are efficient, but the hybrids offer the best blend of performance and economy, with the 1.8 version likely to account for the majority of sales.

Build quality is excellent, and the hybrids in particular feel quiet and well insulated from the outside world.

It’s all rather premium, with a sense that the car is built to last.

The entry-level Icon is well equipped, but you can upgrade to Icon Tech or Design spec, plus a lavish Excel spec only available on hybrid versions of the hatchback and estate.

Overall, the new Corolla is an excellent car that should be on the shortlist of buyers looking for a smart and efficient family hatchback.
