- For: Price, equipment, safety
- Against: Engine, dull to drive, generic styling
- Verdict: MG’s best SUV is safe, loaded with equipment and backed by a strong warranty
The MG HS is the Chinese company’s best car to date, boasting a headline-grabbing price tag, seven-year warranty (take note, Kia!), five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and a long list of standard kit.
Prices start from £21,000, with the top-spec Exclusive costing just £25,000 when fitted with an automatic transmission.
There’s just one engine available: a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol that is neither particularly quick nor very efficient. In fact, it’s arguably the weakest link in an otherwise impressive package.
MG offers three trim levels: Explore, Excite and Exclusive. All offer a generous level of equipment, while the cabin is finished using nice materials and a minimalist design.
Put simply, the HS is far better than you’d think, especially at this price. It’s fine to drive, but no better than that.
Only the dated engine and a question mark over residual (resale) values let the side down.
