Mercedes-Benz GLC review

• Verdict: Practical, safe and comfortable family SUV

The ‘C’ in Mercedes-Benz GLC means this family SUV has a lot in common with the C-Class.

As a result, it’s one of the most convincing cars in its class, packing enough wizardry to take on the might of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

Central to its appeal is a high-class cabin, which is paired with a smooth and relaxing driving experience. There’s a bewildering array of trim levels and options, including the (slightly crazy) AMG 43 and (certifiable) AMG 63, which offer enough power to keep a sports car honest.

There’s also a GLC Coupe, which is a sleeker,  less practical and more expensive version of the standard car.

Aside from the AMG models, all GLCs are powered by a choice of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, with a nine-speed automatic transmission fitted as standard.

Throw into the mix decent practicality, a strong image and reasonable running costs, and you’ve got the hallmarks of an excellent SUV.
