The Mercedes-AMG GT is more than just a car – it’s a family of performance weapons.

In addition to the ‘standard’ GT, there’s also an Edition 476 special edition, a more potent GT S, an even more hardcore GT C and a track-oriented GT R. You can also add Roadster versions and a four-door GT to the mix.

In all cases, power is sourced from a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine, which delivers furious acceleration no matter which flavour of GT you opt for.

Predictably, the soundtrack is intoxicating, while the motorsport-derived suspension ensures handling is precise and poised.

The two-door versions are let down by a cramped cabin and a questionable interior layout.

Furthermore, with prices starting from around £100,000, it’s hardly affordable, while the thirsty V8 engine ensures running costs will be steep.

Even so, the negatives are balanced by the sheer lunacy of the things.
