- For: Space, practicality, value for money, now pure-electric
- Against: Van-like styling, long-distance electric range
- Verdict: Does it exactly what it says on the tin
In an industry that blurs the lines, there’s something refreshingly honest about the Citroen e-Berlingo – which for 2022 becomes a pure electric model.
While the fashion-conscious squash themselves into compromised crossovers, it sticks to a principle of pure practicality.
In standard ‘M’ guise, the five-seat e-Berlingo offers 775 litres of boot capacity. The e-Berlingo XL is 35cm longer, adding two extra seats and 1,050 litres to the mix.
In the cabin, you’ll find 28 cubbies offering a further 186 litres of stowage.
There are two trim levels: Feel and the SUV-like Flair XTR. All get air conditioning, cruise control, an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 136hp electric motor is paired to a 50 kWh battery, for 174 miles of range according to official metrics – although drive it on the motorway and this will drop notably, thanks to the bluff aerodynamics.
There are no surprises on the road, but the current e-Berlingo is more pleasant to drive than models of old. Indeed, the electric version is even nicer, with low noise levels, a cushioned ride and stable handling..
Put simply, no car at this end of the market is so very useful. Well, apart from the platform-sharing Peugeot Rifter and Vauxhall Combo Life. Which have also gone all-electric…
